Should Joseph break up with a bad girlfriend, as in Veronica?

Ok, so, my friend Joseph has a girlfriend. She lives in Ohio and he lives in Virginia, which would be a very long distance relationship. He is 17 and she is his "fiance". Also, everyday she always gets mad at him for no apperant reason and then never talks to him. So he tells us constantly to text her and see if she texts back. She is a terrible girlfriend, and he refuses to break up with her. Soo, should Joseph break up with Veronica?
